The tournament heads into its 45th year and seventh with the Commonwealth Motors family with a nod to its history.

The 45th edition of the Commonwealth Classic holiday tourney kicks off Friday afternoon at Methuen High School with eight boys hoops teams and eight girls hoops teams vying for the title.

This year’s tourney, the seventh edition in partnership with Charlie Daher and the Commonwealth Motors family, brings a few changes and a nod to the deep history of the event.

The tourney returns to a two-division format for both the boys and girls, with each team guaranteed two games. The tourney also introduces their first Hall of Fame class this year, which will be honored between the boys championship games on Monday, Dec. 30.

Co-tournament director Rich Napolitano (who took running the tourney alongside fellow Valley hoops guru Rick Gorman a decade ago) joined me to discuss this year’s tourney, the evolution of the tourney and the addition of the Hall of Fame to the festivities this year.

Here’s the schedule for this year’s tourney. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students at the door at MHS’ Klimas Field House, just off Ranger Road in Methuen.
