Central Catholic will start as the team to beat in the Large, while Tewksbury is reigning queens of the Small.

The 2019-20 MVC girls basketball season begins with a lot of talent returning to the league after a stellar 2018-19 season.

Central Catholic won the Division 1 North title over Belmont before losing in the state semifinals. In the Small, Tewksbury went 19-4 and made it to the Division 2 North finals before losing to Pentucket, 56-45.

Andover (D1 North semis) and Billerica (Division 1 North 46-45 loss to CCHS in quarters) return with playoff experience in the Large, while Haverhill (Division 1 North quarters) will try to improve on their playoff showing in the Small.

Fast facts: We are going to be a young team again this year with adding four freshmen to our roster and having five returning sophomores. This year’s sophomore class has a full season of varsity basketball under their belt, so they understand the competitiveness of MVC basketball and have definitely learned from that experience. Our upperclassmen have been showing great leadership to our younger players especially our two senior captains. The energy in the gym has been great along with the work ethic of the players. We are hoping for an exciting year and hope to make a return to the state tournament.

Fast facts: New coach Hilary Glynn replaces Dave Giribaldi, who went 16-24 in two seasons. She starred for Methuen’s 1999 Division 1 state championship team and still holds the Framingham State record for 3-pointers in a career (183) while scoring 1,130 career points. She spent the last two seasons as Georgetown’s head coach and had accepted the Northern Essex job before coming to her alma mater … Keaney (11 goals), B. Tardugno (13 goals), S. Tardugno (4 goals) and Henrick (4 shutouts, 117 saves) all starred for the girls soccer team in the fall.
