The Red Rangers start the 2019-20 season as the team to beat. Girls Ice Hockey MVC/Dual League 2019-20 Season Primer

The Red Rangers start the 2019-20 season as the team to beat.

The 2019-20 MVC/Dual League girls ice hockey season gets underway Thursday night as Billerica/Chelmsford visits Beverly/Danvers.

The MVC large schools will be looking to unseat Methuen-Tewksbury, the defending league and state champions.

We asked each coach for the MVC winter sports to send us the basics on their team heading into the 2019-20 season. Here is how the girls ice hockey coaches around the MVC responded.

Head Coach: Tyler Vigue (first year)

Assistant Coach: Meagan Keefe, Madison Ricci

2018-19 Record: 19-3-1

Returning starters: Sara Carle (Sr., defense), Kate Gemmel (Sr., forward), Hannah Rowe (Sr., forward), Lauren Adams (Soph., forward)

Returning lettermen: Kaitlyn Cormier (Jr., Defense), Ashley Chiango (Soph., Defense), Kalli Archambault (Jr., Forward), Lillian Reeves (Jr., Forward)

Promising newcomers: Lillian Jagger (Soph., Goalie, first year starter) Jacqueline Haney (Soph., Defense)

Returning leading scorers: Adams (20 goals, 20 assists), Gemmell (5 g, 10 a)

Captains: Carleo, Gemmell, Rowe

Fast facts: The loss of nine seniors last year will be the biggest hurdle to overcome. Lauren Adams was a key goal scorer, but she centered Emma Gilmartin and Callie Wiley who both had 15+ goals themselves. Lillian Jagger will be taking over as netminder after Sean D’Urso graduated and we are extremely confident in her taking over. We will have to work harder defensively as we were a team that did not let up many goals last year … The Golden Warriors’ D1 semis finish was their first visit to the semis since the team moved up from D2 in 2006-07 and the 19 wins were the most for the program since 2004-05.

Head Coach: Ray Monroe (first year)

Assistant Coaches: Dani Crawford and Nikkole Storey

Returning starters: Sammy Fantasia, Lea Gaspar, Sarah Noyes, Sofia Balan, Tori Apostalakes, Julia Williams, Piper Boudreau, Gina Sciortino, Brenna Murray

Returning lettermen: Samantha Fantasia

Returning leading scorer: Sammy Fantasia (12 goals, 13 assists)

Captains: Sammy Fantasia and Brenna Murray

Returning honorees: Fantasia (MVC first team all star, Lowell Sun All-Star, Team MVP)

Fast facts: Young team, with a bunch of players with new opportunities to take over bigger roles.

Returning Lettermen: Rachelle Zinland (Jr., Forward), Riley Buckley (Soph., Forward), Aubrey Waelter (Soph., Forward), Zoe Martin (Jr., Goalie), Kira Connors (Jr., Goalie), Joey Nolet (Jr., Forward), Liz Hassell (Soph., Forward), Ally Albano (Soph., Defense)

Returning honorees: Kane (Conference All Star, Shriners All Star Game, 2019 HNIB Summer Festival All Star), Keating (2 Time Conference All Star, Shriners All Star Game, 2018 HNIB Summer Festival MVP)

Fast facts: Looking to beat Methuen Tewksbury for the first time in our program’s history (0-10-2 overall against Red Rangers) … Have never finished first in the MVC Small or Large … Looking to becoming a more balanced team to complement strong defense by being more offensive and scoring more goals … Senior All Stars Kane (Haverhill HS) and Keating (North Andover HS) remaining at their schools to play together to go deep into post season … Keating has committed to play college hockey for Utica in the fall … Goalie Hubbard was a star last year with a 2.49 goals-against average and three shutouts in 18 games.

Returning lettermen: Jessica Driscoll, Abby O’Keefe, Tori Schille, Katelyn DiMambro, Kylie Winsor, Tory Sweeney, Madison Robillard, Alexis Raymond

Promising newcomers: Riley Sheehan, Nikole Gosse

Returning leading scorers: Pendleton (9); Driscoll (6), Greene (2 g, 18 assists)

Captains: Greene (C), Quinn (C), Hollingsworth (A)

Returning honorees: Hollingsworth (League All-Conference, Globe All-Scholastic, Eagle-Tribune MVP, Shriner’s Game Participant); Greene (Eagle-Tribune All-Star, League All-Star); Madi Sjostedt (League All-Star)

Fast facts: Division 1 State Champions and we graduated a lot of scoring. However, we have a large senior class returning who have now been to the Garden twice. We will need to find a way to put the puck in the net in order to be competitive in our very difficult league. We also have a core defense returning so we hope to play a lot of close games … Hollingsworth had a 1.07 goals-against average and six shutouts last season … this is Crowe’s first season playing varsity hockey after back-to-back seasons as MVC MVP in field hockey.
