The Golden Warriors swim team's seniors are now 60-0 with yet another Division 1 state title. And Over, And Over, And Over Again: Golden Warriors Win Another State Swim Title

The Golden Warriors swim team’s seniors are now 60-0 with yet another Division 1 state title.

The pace at which Andover continues to amass new highs for their program hasn’t slowed one bit, even after the retirement of legendary coach Marilyn Fitzgerald.

The latest example came Sunday at the MIAA Division 1 Swim Championships at MIT.

The Golden Warriors cruised to the state title with 456.5 points, more than 200 points better than second place Needham. It is the first title for new head coach Patty Barrett.

Freshman Michaela Chokureva set two state records. Her first, a 22.18 in the 50 freestyle, broke the previous record set by a Warriors alum, Rachel Moore in 2011 (23.37). Then Chokureva set the record in the 100 freestyle with a 50.09, besting the old standard of 50.19.

Senior Emily Clements would have been the headline of the story on any other day, especially since she is part of a senior class that finished 60-0. Clements won state titles in the 200 IM (2:06:57) and the 100 backstroke (56.29). It is her first state title in the 100 backstroke after winning state titles in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle as a sophomore.

Teammate Emily Ma finished second in the 100 backstroke. Then Chokureva, Clements and Ma combined with Polina Malinovskaya to win the the 400 freestyle relay and then with Charlotte Moulson to win the 200 freestyle relay.

The Chelmsford team of Laura Latham, Alex Kam, Lindsey Downer and Neva Sa finished fifth in the 400 free relay. North Andover finished sixth, Lowell 11th, Methuen 12th and Haverhill 13th.

It was far from the only successes for MVC swimmers on Sunday.

North Andover sophomore Malia Auman broke the 200 freestyle state record in 1:48.32. Then she won the 500 freestyle in 4:53.56, beating the meet record and besting the field by 15 seconds.

Haverhill sophomore Cailey Simard won the Division 1 state title in diving with 450.25 points.

And Methuen’s Caleb Canavan won the boys diving title with 378.10 points. Rangers teammate Lex Flores was second with 376.70.

Chelmsford’s Laura Latham won the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.50 seconds and finished second in the 50 freestyle. She was also part of relay teams that finished fifth and eighth.

On the team level, Chelmsford finished eighth, North Andover finished 10th, Haverhill 11th, Lowell 12th and Methuen 13th.

In Division 2, Central Catholic took second place in the girls team rankings, led by senior Kerrigan Hemp. The dominant star took state titles in the girls 100 backstroke with a 55.94 meet record and in the girls 100 butterfly.
