The Raiders earn high honors for their epic win, including a repeat MVP win.
If you were looking for exciting football, you needed look no further than the MVC in Week 9. On Friday night, the North Andover Scarlett Knights pulled off what on paper looked like a stunning upset of No. 1 Reading. But for those that have watched the Knights and saw lowly Lexington almost take down Reading, it was a much more achievable Cinderella story than outsiders might have thought.
That said, it was a heck of a game. But it paled in comparison to the two Saturday playoff games, as Central Catholic took down Everett, 39-37, in a game that lived up to the hype and then some as the Raiders stopped their nemesis on a two-point conversion in overtime to end it.
And not to be outdone, Tewksbury made a conversion stop of their own to take down No. 2 Concord-Carlisle. And in non-playoff games, Billerica blocked an extra point to win a classic over Lynn English.
Our MVP vote came down to Ayden Pereira from Central Catholic (the Week 1 winner), Freddy Gabin from North Andover, Kyle Darrigo from Tewksbury and Brendan Tighe from Lowell (the fourth-nom flash poll winner who had a 6 total TD game).
The vote was rarely close, though it did not draw as much attention (hello, MIAA, even the polls get less votes when half the teams are playing “meaningful” games and half supposedly aren’t).
Pereira took the fan vote and host Tim Wood’s vote to take the MVP prize for Week 9.
Here’s this week’s “MVC Gridiron Weekly” Honor Roll, presented by realtor Jen Hamilton.
